A Uniformization Approach for the Dynamic Control of Queueing Systems with Abandonments
نویسندگان
چکیده
We consider queueing systems with generally distributed abandonment times. By explicitly modeling the waiting time of the first customer in line, we obtain a natural bounded jump Markov process allowing for uniformization. This approach is useful to solve, via dynamic programming, various optimization problems where the objectives and/or constraints involve the distributions of the performance measures, not only their expected values. An illustration of the usefulness of the approach is given for the dynamic control of a V-design queueing problem.

Dynamic control of a tandem system with abandonments
The goal of this paper is to provide a model that is an extension of classic scheduling problems for a tandem queueing system by including customer impatience. In such scenarios, the server(s) must balance abandonments from each phase of service with the need to prioritize higher reward customers. This presents an interesting challenge since the trade-off between the cost of abandonments and re...
متن کاملOn scheduling a multiclass queue with abandonments under general delay costs
We consider a multiclass queueing system with abandonments and general delay costs. A system manager makes dynamic scheduling decisions to minimize long-run average delay and abandonment costs. We consider the three types of delay cost: (i) linear, (ii) convex, and (iii) convex–concave, where the last one corresponds to settings where customers may have a particular deadline in mind but once th...
متن کاملDynamic control of a single-server system with abandonments
In this paper we discuss the dynamic server control in a two-class service system with abandonments. Two models are considered. In the first case, rewards are received upon service completion and there are no abandonment costs (other than the lost opportunity to gain rewards). In the second, holding costs per customer per unit time are accrued and each abandonment involves a fixed cost. Both ca...

متن کاملA Constrained Optimization Problem for a Two-Class Queueing Model
We discuss dynamic server control in a two-class service system under a constraint on the number of high-priority customers. A class of randomized threshold policies is defined, and is proven to contain an optimal policy in the case without abandonments. The proof of optimality is then used to construct heuristic policies for the case of low-priority abandonments, which we test numerically. The...
